Sol’s throat closes momentarily. It refuses to cooperate. She swallows. Her mind flashes to those times, Zaria’s arms around her, her shoulder a battering ram of power in the center of Sol's abdomen, when they’d slipped up in the ring and Sol had taken a spear meant for someone else.
But, those times, Zaria always came to her with gentle, apologetic hands, and gentle, apologetic eyes, and she used that soft voice that meant she cared. That meant she would never try to hurt Sol. She was never supposed to try to hurt Sol.
“Oh, so you finally see me?” Zaria asks, not sympathetic in the slightest. “I finally have your attention?”

Two: Zaria, ever the loyal friend, can offer some help.
It’s fine. Great, even, Sol thinks. People do friends with benefits all the time. So what, if Sol’s been madly in love with Zaria for years? Surely, that won’t be a problem at all, right?
