Ilya's face split into a wide grin. It made his eyes sparkle. Shane wanted to kiss him very badly. "Oh. Oh. You are very drunk."
"I wouldn't say very drunk. I'm normal drunk." Shane corrected, stepping closer to Ilya until they were barely centimeters apart. Shane reached up and wrapped his arms around Ilya's neck. They were so close and he smelled so good. Shane breathed him in for a second. Fuck, he had missed him so badly. It had only been two weeks, but it felt like forever.
"I missed you too." Ilya whispered. Wait, had Shane said that out loud? Oops. Maybe he was very drunk. "More than you know."
Or, the transition from friends with benefits to lovers is far from seamless.

“I will beat Yuna Hollander at Scrabble one day,” Ilya declares against Shane’s hip bone.
In the year between the Cottage and the Centaurs, Ilya misses Shane more than ever. Svetlana’s teenage cousin offers a coping method: Kpop-style Shane Hollander photocards to stare at all day long. It's a shame carrying around pictures of fellow hockey players is just not socially acceptable.

“You’re such an asshole,” Shane grumbled, jabbing a socked foot into Ilya’s thigh.
“Interference,” Ilya gasped dramatically, grabbing Shane’s foot. “Ref, we need a penalty call here!"
“Let me go,” Shane laughed, wriggling his foot out of Ilya’s grip. Ilya, unrelenting, threw his arms around both of Shane’s legs instead, dragging them onto his lap.
“Fine,” Shane huffed, readjusting his grip on the video game controller. “Whatever. Hold my legs hostage. I’ll still beat you next round.”
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep, Hollander,” Ilya said, before he got distracted by the buzz of his phone.
It was a message from Matthias. Ilya bit back a smitten little smile as he tapped out a response.
When he looked up, Shane was staring at him.
“New girl?” he asked, an inscrutable look on his face.
