The gods are cruel. They know all too well that they were never meant to exist, and as the aeons turned their shackles only tightened, on this world that was not theirs.
Mortals are weak. They can hope, and they can dream, and that is everything and nothing at all. A pessimist will say that is worse than nothing, even. But dreams carry their own power. And in the right place, and in the right time, even something as insubstantial as a weak man's desperate Wish can bring about the end of an empire.
This is the story of how Diluc - Crepus's Wish, and son, and god - burned so bright that not even death could claim him, not once, not twice, not thrice.

There is something in your heart that is not you.
You do not know where it came from – you do not remember. You are not sure you care to. There is a part of your mind - the one devoted to ruthless practicality, to the bearings of a soldier, to precision and uniforms worn just so and reports written just so and orders obeyed just so - that protests and whines and screams and rages at its inability to find the beginning.
The rest of you does not care overly much. It is content to drift, aimless, in the muck. But that meticulous part of you demands order, a resolution. It says that it is the only way you will remember who you are, and that without it - without that beginning - you will never find an ending either.

There are times where the sparks on his forge look brighter than he should. Little half glimpses of a reality that has long died, white hot flame that he did not need to struggle to control. He will look away from the red-hot metal for a moment, chasing the memory of flame. A blink later, and the dream will fade as swiftly as it came to him.

It’s the first warm day of the year, spring chasing away the harsh remnants of winter, fogging one’s mind with a peaceful fresh-grass tingle and making it near impossible to focus on mundane tasks. As diligent as Crepus claims to be, even he is not immune to what feels like every atom in his body begging to pull him free from his desk.
Weinlesefest is approaching. The Winery is nigh-buried in work. And yet, just this once, Crepus casts that aside, bundles his child into his arms, and heads out the door into the sunlight.
