Fingon's spirt doesn't move on after his death, but rather attaches itself to Maedhros and changes the course of the future of Arda. Maedhros choses to atone for his actions rather than go forward with the Fourth Kinslaying. However spirits aren't meant to dwell in Middle Earth and those that do fade away. Maedhros and Fingon must deal with the consequences of their actions while trying to forge a new path ahead.
