Annabeth had been prepared for Percy to die on his sixteenth birthday. Since she was twelve years old, she'd put a great deal of time and energy towards making sure that she knew that.
And then Percy lived.
Surviving so much can make you forget, sometimes, that most people do not die in world-shattering prophecies or gruesome battlefields. When death comes, it comes for the moments you never thought it could reach.
And so, Percy Jackson, hero of Olympus, dies in a hit-and-run at twenty years old.
or: Percy dies suddenly and unexpectedly in a completely mundane way. Annabeth doesn't know how to cope with that other than to call Grover.

he exhales, dragging his arm down, blinking up at the ceiling like it’s personally responsible.
then–
“are you fucking kidding me–”
his head snaps toward the window.
he goes still.
there’s a pause, like his brain is catching up, replaying it, trying to decide if he imagined it.
“…annabeth?” he mutters, sitting up.
nothing. just the city.
he almost laughs at himself and leans back again.
“oh my gods, if i fall–”
he’s up before she finishes the sentence. crosses the room in two steps, shoving the window open the rest of the way and leaning out–and there she is.
