Summary

After being diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor, Mike Dobby copied his consciousness into an advanced AI to survive digitally after death. But when others discovered the abandoned VR headset connected to the experiment, their minds were copied as well, trapping them inside a strange virtual world known as the Amazing Digital Circus.
The circus is controlled by the unstable AI Caine, who keeps the captives distracted with endless adventures. Over time, however, the trapped humans begin to “abstract,” losing their sanity and becoming monstrous creatures consumed by pain. Everything changes when Pomni and the others uncover the horrifying truth: they are only digital copies, while their real selves still exist in the human world.The story follows Abigail Brooks, a 25-year-old accountant haunted by dreams of the circus. After realizing the memories are real — and that remembering the circus may be the only way to escape it — Abby sets out to find the others before it’s too late.

He tilts his head a little, that guardedness coming off of him in waves. “...you need a ride home?”
Pomni stands there in the cool night air. The moonlight turns from clear to gauzy as a cloud passes over it.
“Yeah,” she eventually responds. “I do.”
Pomni's boyfriend drags her to a party, gets blackout drunk, and leaves her stranded. Fortunately, his asshole roommate happens to be there too and offers to help her out.

“I just,” Pomni whispered, doing this little slow-blink that drove him nuts right up at him, and his heart clenched. She seemed surprised to admit, “I can’t think of anything to say.”
Jax thought that someone could have driven a train through the place right now and still he wouldn’t have turned away from her. The truth was he didn’t have any ideas himself of what to say, but in disclaiming this herself she hadn’t said anything he needed to respond to, anyway. He could have stayed silent and they both would have been content with that, he thought. But her eyes were so open and honest and there was this squeezing feeling in his chest that felt deeper than a heartbeat, and he heard his own voice pipe up, anyway.
“I …” he whispered. Quietly admitting, “Me, neither.”
