Ed waits until he hears the door upstairs open and close before going inside the apartment, in a bit of a daze.
His gaze falls on the kitchen clock: it’s only noon. He still needs to take the clothes out of the washing machine.
“What the fuck,” he whispers.

Summary
Ed can read the writing on the wall.
He's been at this long enough that he sees the changes, recognizes how much more effort it takes now to ambush a merchant ship, sees how much harder the crews fight back, is always scanning the horizon for the English or Spanish armadas because their numbers are either growing or they're getting better or both. At first he thinks it's because they aren't flying the Blackbeard flag anymore, no automatic surrender like he's used to, but when they make port he hears the whispers, who's been caught and who's escaped, and Ed recognizes names. A lot of names. Pirates that he's known, good and bad, dead by the English, bodies swaying in the winds where they've been hanged and then hung as a warning. Stories of all kinds that end in this same way.

As the Age of Piracy draws to a close, Ed convinces Stede to retire. Well, on a trial basis, at least.
