His brother sounds rushed and harried, and despite the knowledge that Ryland is always rushed and harried, it automatically puts Colt on edge. “Nothing bad, just–” Colt hears Ryland’s voice go muffled, like he covered the mic with his hand. He’s shouting over to someone that he’ll be back out in just a second. “–just, can you pick Court up?”
What? “Of course,” Colt says, “but I thought he was supposed to be at the park ‘til five?”
“Yeah, I just got a call from Sarah–she’s the one supervising–she told me that Court got hurt so she’d rather someone pick him up early.”
Following the absolute shitshow that was their father's death, Ryland is just trying to keep them afloat, Colt wants nothing more than to help, and Court is just trying his best to keep his head down.

Arthur shut his eyes. This was him now. A slave. His past life forgotten save for the appeal of selling him off to a new master. He had tried to escape so many times and had the scars to count them, but he could escape no more now. He had accepted it months ago.
Suddenly, a voice rose.
“Twelve hundred gold pieces.”
And the crowd fell into a hush.

“And chivalrous—"
“I bet he beats his servants,” Arthur insisted, with no proof or reason. “And his dogs.”
“And handsome—”
“Handsome?!” Arthur shouted, so loud that it boomed in Merlin’s ears. He jerked his head up in surprise. Dark spots of red had bloomed across Arthur’s cheeks, flush and furious. “He is not! He’s—shut up, Merlin!”

“Merlin, what is in your hair?” Gaius asks - rather judgmentally, Merlin thinks. It’s not as though Gaius can turn into a bird, making his opinion irrelevant. Everyone’s opinions shall now be irrelevant to him unless they can turn into birds, he decides. He puts a hand to his hair and feels a leaf.
(So this is a very canon-inaccurate sort of re-telling, with some big divergences, minus a dragon or prophecy or two)
