Sonic.
He was like a shooting star. He could have been a shooting star, except no, he wasn't, she knew for certain that was Sonic. She watched, entranced by the display.

Summary
Sage is dead.
That is the aftermath of fighting The End. Sage is dead, by Sonic's own fault, and it's a guilt he cannot live with. He has to fix it. Even if fixing it means throwing a copy of his memories into the past in hopes that he can learn from his own mistakes.
It's one island. One fight. That's all he has to do. He just has to do it right, and he'll have saved Sage. And he can pretend like nothing ever happened, and like he was the perfect hero Sonic the Hedgehog is supposed to be all along.
Simple as that.
