For the record, Ajax was not at all opposed to being sent on missions as another Harbinger's backup. As long as he was given things to fight and the rest of the tasks were not excruciatingly boring to get through, Tartaglia would comply without issues.
The actual mission, the actual tasks, the actual experience of being the backup was not the issue here.
The issue was-...He was the only Harbinger being tasked with things like these. The only Harbinger being designated as backup. The only Harbinger being treated like a class below the rest.
(Because Tartaglia was rash and reckless and could not be trusted to keep himself safe.
Tartaglia was to be looked after like an unpredictable rabid animal that only behaved under certain conditions.Tartaglia was off.)

‘When I heard that Pantalone was getting married, I assumed that it would be to you.’ Columbina stated.
Dottore choked on air, he almost fell off of his seat in an attempt to steady himself. ‘Pardon…?’ He croaked out in shock.
Columbina hummed elegantly, watching Pantalone dance with the woman.
‘Why on Teyvat would he marry me—‘ Dottore looked exceedingly flustered, ignoring the flutter in his chest that appeared at the thought.
‘I thought you were in a relationship,’ She spoke as if this was common knowledge, even raising her eyebrow as if Dottore was the one who had gone mad.
‘No— not at all…’ Dottore muttered: mortified. He ran a hand through his hair in an embarrassment.
‘Oh, okay,’ She accepted this response, ‘I was going to suggest kidnapping him until she gives up and finds someone else.’ Columbina flashed him a wide, slightly eerie smile.
Dottore rolled his eyes. ‘I don’t care if they get married,’ He lied.

Summary
A snowstorm has hit the Zapolyarny Palace, all the Harbingers are trapped inside (only mentions of them), they all find different ways to entertain themselves while Pantalone's mind is drove wild for being trapped inside.
After he reject Dottore for affection, Dottore finds himself curious and sneek at night into his chambers only to find out Pantalone found another way to ease himself apart from cigarette (self harm, only mentioned not explicit).
|Short: Pantalone hurts himself and Dottore soothe him|
Additional info : not necesseraly accurate character behaviour (I do not care), their relationship is not labeled but they do kiss and "confess".

Dottore knows at this point what little of his wretched humanity remains does him no favors that he's aware of so he gets rid of it.
he hadn't realized his humanity was also his motivation to do... well... anything as well as doing so has some unpleasant side effects. And unfortunately Pantalone must suffer because of that.
