Gabriel Agreste’s death’s butterfly effect was quite unexpected. Adrien was shipped to London, under the assumption that a tragedy like this could only be managed under the intense care and control of the Graham de Vanily family. Marinette had seen it coming, of course. What she hadn’t predicted was the sudden disappearance of Chat Noir. Without Monarch’s terror shadowing over Paris, she knew it was bound to happen – after all, Ladybug had also vanished over time – but Chat’s departure had felt… rash. Like he couldn’t wait to get rid of the burden that came with his ring.

Summary
In this fic, Adrien never went to school, so Adrien and Marinette never met. Marinette never really had a crush on anyone, but she still consistently rejected Chat Noir’s advances because she thought he was immature and flirted with anything that moved. Just like in canon, eventually he stopped trying and they settled into their routine of being partners and defeating akumas every week or so. Everything essentially kept the same pattern as the first 2-3 seasons.
In this fic, they are aged up a bit. They’ve both finished their high school years and university. They’re both 22 years old and we’re starting in the summer right after they both graduated from university. Adrien is still modeling for Gabriel while Marinette is trying to start her own couture design business.
Chat Noir gets awarded the “Paris’s Most Eligible Bachelor” award. Marinette happens to see the show on the TV and starts to feel jealous that he’s openly dating now (which he hadn’t done before). She decides that she wants him, so first she tries to woo him as Ladybug, but he shuts that down. So she decides to try as Marinette. Cue shenanigans.

Attend his friends' parties, maintain small talk, get through the day — and hopefully his friends won't realize how messed up he really is.
Everyone is out-pacing him. While he's barely getting out of bed in the morning, his friends are making waves, changing lives, getting engaged.
He can't even get his girlfriend to text him back.
So, sure. Maybe he's not in the best head space right now — but 'suicidal'? Ladybug's certainly just reading too deeply into things. But if her concern for Chat Noir's mental state is enough to get her reaching out, well, he won't turn down the opportunity to chat with a friend. Besides, Ladybug seems to be having a rough go of it, too. Maybe they can help each other out.
