Summary
It’s the first time the word has left his mouth in a decade. Before that, the context was in reference to fictional characters in shows or films he used to watch. To Edward Cullen and Lestat. It was his mum who used to love that genre most and Harry who would dutifully watch with her. Now, he probably couldn’t bear any of it. Just like he can’t bear to see his mother.
Once such a simple, fantastical word.
Now it encapsulates the tragedy and the ruin that is his life.
“I’m a vampire,” he says again. Because if he has to say it, he might as well do so loud and clear.†
harry is still coming to terms with his affliction, which means it isn't the best time to go falling in love. and when louis joins the New York-based company where harry works, love isn't what harry's after. a harmless flirt in the lunchroom, maybe. a few conversations on the train ride home. but not love...or so harry tells himself.

You learn so much about someone by the way they say goodbye.
This is what Louis thinks about in those grey hours between when he wishes he could sleep but has to be awake, and when he should be sleeping but can only think, think, think. The doctors call it insomnia but Louis has his own secret little diagnosis - regret.
For Louis, it was all wrapped up into a single incident. He remembers exactly the moment he decided not to listen to Harry's begging, exactly how deafening he had made the slam of the door on the way out. And that was it for him.
Because that way, he didn't have to linger on the humiliation of the whole thing, didn't have to question his own strength, didn't have to stay vulnerable to Harry for another instant.
It was an emotional shortcut, really. And if that isn't a signature Louis' move, he doesn't know what is.
The fact that it didn't save him any pain at all, that he's still twisting the knife at 4am two years later in the privacy of his own bedroom, is also pretty typical of Louis. He's always been a bit of a masochist.

Being a hybrid between a witch and an ordinary has always made his life a bit more challenging. Harry's had to be extra careful because his blood is a gold mine for vampires. Despite this, he decides that he's ready to leave the safety of his small town in exchange for a life in New York City.
In light of stepping outside his comfort zones; Harry gives in when Zayn begs him to allow a vampire to be their new roommate. It could be the biggest mistake of his life, or it could be the best thing he's ever done. Only time will tell.
