    But not anymore. Now, the group of knights slinks through the forest at break-neck speed, with such a degree of practiced and lethal unison they may as well have been the golden dragon curled on each of their shoulders.

    So Merlin is running.

    Merlin is running for his life.

    Merlin accidentally reveals himself as a sorcerer to Arthur and the knights. A very traumatizing 24 hour sorcerer-hunt proceeds this, that leads to a very conflicted Arthur, a very injured Merlin, and a very angry Gwaine.

    Merlin would have expected his magic would be revealed in some epic life or death scenario.
    Not for something so mundane.

    "No. Gaius didn't know.. [....] In fact, I've been very careful hiding my secret from all of you. [...]
    Which is why this is the stupidest thing I have EVER heard!”, Merlin shook of the knights hand, as he stepped forward to the king. Like a mad man. To be fair, he was a little mad.

    “Burned... for heating tea.”, Merlin shook his head.
    [...] "How fucked up is that?!"

     

    Alternatively: what if Merlin was actually condemned to be executed but just decided to -not let them do that.

    Arthur made an attempt to rise from his lying position and the invisible force of magic pushed him down harder. He found it rather difficult to breathe and despite himself he moaned.

    Then the pressure was gone all at once. “Oh gods, did I hurt you? Arthur, I swear, I never -”

    “Don't.” Arthur interrupted Merlin and squeezed his eyes shut, mortified by what he was about to say. “Don’t stop.”

    or: Arthur makes an offer. Merlin agrees. It doesn't go according to plan. The prince discovers new things about Merlin, as well as himself.
