Summary
Hakoda knows he's out of the loop when it comes to Zuko. After all, the first time he saw Sokka since leaving to fight in the war, Sokka mentioned the angry jerk with a ponytail that was chasing them.
The next time he saw his kids, Katara was furious with Zuko for apparently betraying her to help Azula take over Ba Sing Se.
Then, he gets shipped off to the Boiling Rock after the invasion and Sokka, disguised as a guard, tells him Zuko is there and helping.
Before Hakoda knows what's happening, Sozin's Comet has arrived and suddenly Zuko is the Fire Lord.
Zuko is now one of the most powerful people in the world, more powerful than Hakoda.
So why is the Fire Lord, a master firebender with unmatched sword skills, wary of a nonbender whose only real advantage is his height?
Hakoda has seen the dark looks on his children's faces (and yes, that includes Suki and Toph and Aang, and no, Hakoda doesn't know when or how that happened) whenever Ozai is mentioned. He's heard General Iroh sneer his brother's name.
And Zuko?
Hakoda has seen him flinch. -

Summary
The first time Zuko watched his father bend lightning, Ozai had come to himself with a familiar smile, the one Zuko went on to fear.
When Azula bent lightning for the first time, she returned to herself beaming, giggling at her hands in awe of what she had done.
Zuko comes to himself screaming.

Summary
They gravitated towards Zuko whenever the temperature dipped even slightly. At night, he often woke to someone pulling their bedroll towards him, or slipping under his arm, or turning over in their sleep and colliding with his shoulder.
It alarmed him, at first. It had never been a good thing when someone woke him in the dead of the night.
It was strange, then, that he was on the run without Uncle, officially a traitor to his homeland, and for the first time since his mother left, he woke in the night sandwiched between bodies, feeling safe.
(Zuko becomes the group's heat-pack.)

Summary
“It’s healing really well.” Katara tells him with a smile, before her lips quirk down into a frown. “Though it’ll still scar pretty bad.”
Zuko shrugs. “It’s ok. I doubt people will really focus on it anyway… the one on my face is a bit more prominent.”
Katara makes a face, like she’s not quite sure if she should laugh or frown, when Toph speaks up.
“You have a scar on your face?” Toph asks, sitting up so she’s sitting by his legs rather than lying on them.
Zuko blinks. He never quite forgets that Toph is blind, but the fact that she can’t see his scar never really occurred to him.
“Oh, yeah.” Zuko looks down at his lap. “My father burned like, half my face off before I was banished.” He says it a little too casually, probably not bitterly enough.
A crash next to him makes him look up, to see Katara's horrified expression, and a shattered bowl of water at her feet.
No one says anything for a long moment.
“Zuko… it- your dad?” Katara finally manages to gasp out. Zuko blinks at her, his brain moving slowly.
“You didn’t know?” He asks in genuine surprise.
“No.” Sokka wheezes.
Zuko blinks at him. “Oh.” Is all he can manage to say.

Summary
Tommy was six when the green markings first appeared on his right forearm.
The one rule of soulmates has always been that you can't write your name or any identifying characteristics back to them.
So Tommy called them Green.

Summary
This house, so big and expensive, was never supposed to take someone like him in- a house like this is meant for the nice children with good records and perfectly pleasant attitudes towards absolutely everything, even dog shit. It wasn't in the request forms that Phil had filled out, but it was just how foster kids were grouped sometimes; the good kids get the good houses, and kids like Tommy weren't even allowed in the neighborhood's vicinity. Him ending up here was never supposed to happen; there’d been some misplaced paperwork, and Tommy had ended up on Phil’s doorstep with a bad attitude and thunder in his expression, fully expecting to be sent away the second the man caught a look at the bruise on his jaw and the rage on his face. But he only opened the door further and told Tommy that they'd get it all sorted out in a few days. He'd naturally assumed that 'sorted out' meant sending him back, and had never fully unpacked in the days that he'd stayed; he mainly kept to his room, in the interest of not pissing off the nice man who hadn't left him outside like a lot of others had done. Tommy was never meant to stay.
Or: Tommy will throw down at any time for any reason and everyone knows it.

Summary
What was it his dad had said, blood coating his knuckles? That he brought too much trouble to the family while giving nothing in return? That he should get out and stay out?
It was bullshit. He knew it was bullshit. Knew it in the way anger clenched his fists and quickened his breath. In the way that every now and then, money disappeared from his account with no explanation. He already paid for the Wi-Fi and the electricity, figuring that was fair since he used so much of it. He did his chores, even when the unfairness of them made him clench his jaw. So what if he got into the occasional fight?
There was a voice in his head telling him that being beaten up wasn't a fight; he was tall for his age, but skinny and spent his free time playing video games, his chances against one person was low, never mind four. The voice sounded suspiciously like Wilbur, so he ignored it.
It was bullshit. So he listened, and he left and he hadn't looked back once.
Tommy is alone, injured and so, so tired. He has one destination in mind: Brighton.
He just hopes Wilbur will be happy to see him.
