Ilya ignored the request from the NHL twice. The first time they asked through his agent, the second time the director of marketing called his personal number directly. He never got along with the league as a player, and he certainly didn't need to make them happy now.
The next attempt to reach him was harder to ignore. A phone call from an unknown number. A voicemail that made his blood run cold.
"Hi Ilya. This is Rose Landry. We've never met, but Shane speaks so highly of you. I think the NHL has been trying to get in touch. Shane said you probably wouldn't talk to them. But...think about it, ok? I know it would mean a lot to him."
The final request crumbled his resolve. The caller ID blinked "Jane," and Ilya stared at it.

Summary
When Hayden celebrates his 26th birthday at the beginning of November, surrounded by family and close friends, he realizes he has nothing more to wish for. He has everything he needs, a perfect life. The only thing he regularly wishes for is for his best friend to have an equally perfect life, someone standing beside him. Someone who loves him and someone he loves. Hayden realizes he wants Lily to be here too, holding Shane’s hand as she takes her place around the table among family and friends.
Closing his eyes, Hayden wishes that Shane could finally talk about his feelings with Lily. He wishes they would stop lying to each other and people in their lives about what they mean to each other. Six years is a long time to be causally seeing someone. Then he blows his candles.

“You forget how to use phone now?” he asked. Curls shone in the muted hallway light, tousled and dipping onto his forehead. The mole shifted slightly on Ilya’s cheek.
Feeling shuttered into his skin. The quiet peace he’d grasped with shaking hands was slipping away. Shane wanted to cry. Wanted to scream and hit something. Wanted to play dead on the carpet. Blood pulsed behind his eyes.
Instead, he murmured, “Can we not do this right now? I don’t want to… not tonight, Ilya.”
Ilya’s brows dropped. He placed a hand against the door. “Shane, what is wrong?”
Fuck, fuck, of course he wouldn’t just let this go. Shane’s jaw trembled. The panic flooded his system anew. He scrubbed at his eyes again. He’d been fine, he’d kept all the lights off, he’d tuned out the beating of his heart, the feeling of sweat against his spine. He’d fixed it, and now… now, like a relentless weed, the buzz in his nerves had relit.
He wanted to slam his head against the door.

The voice was low, rough with pain, but unmistakably amused. It carried a thick Russian accent that turned the words into something almost musical.
Shane's gaze snapped down to the patient.
The man's eyes were open.
Shane felt his breath catch in his throat.
Or Shane Hollander is a well known Trauma Director Surgeon and the Highest Bratva, Phakan, Ilya Rozanov came to his department bleeding on his gurney.
