It wasn’t a secret that he was smart, being in the top 5 in class and all, but not a lot of people realised how smart he was.
Denki was smart too, despite popular belief.
He understood English as his mothers side of the family were American, and his Father was a math teacher so he understood the basics of math. His quirk relied on his knowledge of science so he understood the basics, plus he did enjoyed it so he studied it when he could. He loved to read in his free time and loved to analyse characters from his favourite books.
He was smart.

Recovery Girl raises an eyebrow at Uraraka snickering to herself. “That doesn’t sound like what I’m seeing here.”
Denki’s mouth opens “Well it makes sense that if the quirk’s effects are to lower inhibitions then a person like Uraraka who doesn’t seem to have any would simply lose the ability to conform to social norms.”
“Inhibitions!” The third year yells out. “I knew there was a word for it!”
Denki can feel Recovery Girl staring at him, almost in shock over what he just said.
That thought feels weird though.
Because if there’s a reason why Denki wouldn’t usually talk like this, he can’t think of it right now.

Kaminari Denki wasn’t stupid, Shouta noted.
He was far from it, actually.
Kaminari might not be academically smart, but hell if he wasn’t people smart. His vocabulary was extensive (even if he preferred not to use it much) and he read pretty difficult English books. He could read people just as well. But not everyone could see past his usual antics of small sparks and forced laughter. Shouta could though. Shouta was an underground pro, after all.
Or, Aizawa Shouta notices everyone's favorite idiot isn't actually as dumb as everyone suspects, and discovers that something might be holding the otherwise intelligent student back.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing mocking me like that, huh?” Katsuki growls in his ear.
At first, Kaminari seems so genuinely confused that Katsuki’s grip instinctively loosens. Then he lets out a soft, 'tch' and Katsuki snarls. Something under his skin burns, and it’s uncomfortable and he doesn’t get why, so it must be Kaminari’s fault, and it all leads back to the ‘tch’. So, he pushes him further into the wall.
His reaction must spark realization in Kaminari because he just rolls his eyes with an almost practiced ease, completely unbothered and says, “I’m not mocking you, I have Tourette’s, ya dingus. Remember?”
[or, five times kaminari's tics echo those of his friends (& teacher) & one time he feels comfortable in his skin]

"You tried piercing your ears without a mirror?" Ojiro asked, much louder than he intended to. "I told you, I thought it would be easy!" Kaminari whined, "Whatever, my door's unlocked, just try not to wake up Iida."
Kaminari wants to get his ears pierced. This should have nothing to do with Ojiro, right? (re-upload/partial rewrite of an old ojinari fic I uploaded here in 2021)
