    The fight on Boxing Day 2020 end with Ilya asking Shane for a break and Shane walking out the door. Ilya never thought that will be the last time he saw Shane, for a very long time. During this time, everyone Shane loved struggle to cope with the grief, some better than others. Ilya stays in Ottawa and watches over Yuan and David Hollander, grieving their only son, and each in their own, do not survive it. Hayden searches for answers in the wreckage of his best friend's disappearance, turning over events in memory, unable to shake the feeling Shane told him something before he vanished.
    When Shane finally reappears, enduring the unthinkable, broken and barely recognizable, what comes next is harder than anyone anticipated.

    Or: AU after the Boxing Day fight in The Long Game. It's a story of grief, found family, a love that withstands hardship and passage of time, and the most unlikely friendship. Recovery is slow and costly and nonlinear, but that's what makes the happy ending hard won. Major Character Death warning are not for Shane or Ilya.

    When Dallas texts him, I’m flying in Tuesday, getting in at 11:45, Shane thinks of all the things he might do instead, alone. He thinks there is a world in which he could say, I can’t today, but the text is not a question, the ticket is already bought, Kent never asks him if he’s welcome first. Kent picks up and flies to another city, because he knows he’s welcome, he knows Shane will let him inside. There was a moment, back in September, when Shane might have asked himself if he wanted this—is this the man you want to sleep with? Is this the way you want to spend your time? Are you having fun? It doesn’t matter. This is the person who wants to be with him.

    He wonders if this is how Ilya felt about him. Impassive.

     

    Or: After an unexpected encounter just before the start of the 2016-17 season, Shane falls into a casual relationship with Dallas Kent. He doesn't meet Rose Landry. He doesn't set foot in Ilya's house outside of Boston. (There is no tuna meltdown.) He stops waiting for Ilya Rozanov to text him back. It's fine, until it isn't.

    Yes, he was a complete asshole that Shane wished he could choke to death sometimes and his brother's childhood bestfriend, but it wouldn’t mean anything. It's for the experience, the education of it all.

    Or: Ilya Rozanov has always been Shane Hollander’s older brother’s best friend. He was never supposed to become Shane’s first everything.
