Xena is injured going through the gauntlet and never runs into Hercules and Iolus, leaving a piece missing to her story.
She’s on her path towards redemption but a much slower one. She wanders through the wilderness alone too long and doesn’t meet Gabrielle until a year later.
Xena isn’t there to save Gabrielle and her family. Gabrielle isn’t there to give Xena a reason to keep working for the greater good.
They meet later when Gabrielle is a more stoic amazon.
