Summary
It was hard to fight a smile when he could hear small steps behind him.
Esmé was trying to be careful, Kattigan would give her that. She was trying to step lightly, carefully putting her foot down on the wooden floors of the cottage in such a way the planks wouldn't creak or bend too much with her weight. But, she hadn't quite figured out that timing her steps with the shave of his knife on wood would make it harder for him to hear her approach.
Still, far be it from him to stop her game.

Summary
A soldier carries a body to to the place its soul called home.
It has happened many times before. It will happen many times after. It is a constant cycle of shrouds and wicker boxes and ashes, or maybe simply a small token. Something will always make its way back, being handled carefully by men at arms arriving to a doorstep of an unsuspecting, or worse, suspecting, family.
The cycle begins.
They didn't remove the cut rope around Thjazi's neck. That was their job, it seemed. All the executioner was signed up to do was cut the line before leaving the body to the marshals. The rope tail was loose on the ground, and there was something about it that spoke of endings and beginnings- a cord connected to a body, and only being cut when the life is born/ended.
But Azune was not a poet. He just
was partially raised by onelived in the same house as one for a while. -

Summary
"… and the same goes for me," he finished, nodding his head and sinking back as Professor Mag'Nesson considered his words. He wasn't saying anything that was revolutionary, after all. Magic is noticed by those who trained in it, like he had, and therefore it makes sense that he and the professor would need to be careful due to the visual effects of their spells and magics. It was probably more of a reminder, really. She was a professor of magic, after all.

Summary
Blood and death were not new visions to Thjazi. He had long accepted it as part of conflict since the war of Axe and Vine- the sinking realization that all conflict for a good will have bloodshed and death was found through shaking hands that desperately held a gash in his brother's chest together while screaming for help. He had known, the moment he ran from Nes- the Lady Royce for his cause, that it would be part of his life again.
He had forgotten, however, that wars always had the tiniest of victims.
With his hair loose and fanning over the edge of the cot, Azune was either asleep or passed out. The difference was hard to tell, without having been by his side. If he had awakened sometime in this past day and then been sedated by magic or vulnerary potion, then it would be more like sleep. But Thjazi didn't know if the boy had woken up since being sprinted here from the battlefield.
He didn't know why his not knowing felt like a failure.

Summary
Mayali felt the low hum of the telekinesis spell fade out before the doors of the room burst open, armed men pouring out of the walls.
This was unsurprising. They were at a gala to kill and fake the killing of prominent political figures, the arrival of security was something that would be expected in any of her contingencies. It was included in them actually, because she was damn good at what she was hired for. The doors being forced open earlier was not ideal, but it could be dealt with. There were plans for that, most of which involved killing the king and a riskier escape, but it was all within expectation.
However, as she twirled a dagger once more in her hands, shifting her eyes to survey the field once more, the guard spoke. He spoke a name, asking for orders, a name that shattered every plan she had.
Azune.
