Chiron’s head snapped back to Annabeth. He pushed his wheelchair closer to her, seemingly concerned. Piper was confused, she thought they had just cleared everything up.
“Child, what did you just say?”
“We’re the ones that will beat the odds,” Annabeth ploughed on, seemingly unconcerned with both Chiron’s newfound caution and Piper’s confusion. “We lead each other home, but we walk side by side. Hand in hand.”
“What makes you think any of this will be different?”
Annabeth let out a humourless laugh. “How can it not be different? It’s already different.”
Chiron sighed. “How long have you known?”
Annabeth tilted her head, grey eyes studying Chiron like a battle plan. “How long have you?”
“Too long.”
“Long enough.”

Annabeth’s chest burned. Her sight went blurry for a moment with rage, before it focused on her brother’s face. His brow crinkled as he stared at her. Annabeth shovelled some food into her mouth, her fork clanging heavily on her plate.
Malcolm look up over her head at the two girls. She watched as he put two and two together.
“Annabeth, they don’t know what they’re talking about. They don’t know you.”
Annabeth rolled her eyes. She wasn’t some insecure girl in need of comfort. “No, they don’t.”
She was hoping her statement, flat and final would end the conversation. Malcolm wouldn’t take the hint.
“Exactly! Besides, they’re new. They didn’t have to sit through the years of pining we all had to watch.”
“It wasn’t that bad.”
Malcolm let out an incredulous laugh. “Wasn’t that bad? ‘Beth, it was torture!"
Or, Annabeth is in love with Percy. Fully in love. Head over heels in love. As in, she would die for him, go back to hell for him, and endure his awful puns for eternity. Why is that so hard to believe?

Chiron frowned again. His eyebrows furrowed a little. It seemed to age him.
Percy spoke again. “I was fourteen, and I washed up there.” He knew that Chiron knew where there was. I was there for two weeks, and I had no way of leaving. But it was also… peaceful. It was like, I knew I had to leave, and I wanted to, but I just couldn’t.”
Or, Percy finally has the time to rest and reflect after the wars. And Calypso is back. And he's reading the Odyssey in class. These things all together do not paint a pretty picture.

Percy looks at his father for the first time in the entire conversation. And he asks something he’s been wanting to know since he was 12 years old. “You were born a god. Did you lose the ability to care, or did you never have it in the first place?”
It’s a genuine question, too. Percy wants to know. He wants to know whether the gods cared once, but grew apathetic to the world around them as it continually changed and they stayed the same. Or maybe, they have never understood what it is like to care, just like they have never understood what it is like to die.

Once, after the conclusion of WWII, the three brothers, sons of Kronos, looked out at the mortal and observed all the destruction that their children wreaked. Depression, famine, starvation. The world was never the same, and with the decades it took to revive the world, it would never be the same again. And so the three brother made a pact, swearing on the river Styx to never sire anymore demigod children, for fear of the total destruction they would cause.
Let it be known that the river Styx does not like oathbreakers.

The thing about swearing oaths on the River Styx is that it is a soul binding agreement. That means no one can get out of it. For if a person were to break the oath, the Styx would lay claim to their soul.
The thing about gods is that they don’t have souls. There is nothing for the river to claim. So, it turns to the next best thing.

The gods wondered where it all went wrong, Chiron didn’t have to.
One thousand years ago, Chiron knew a Perseus. He was one of the best men he knew. Honourable and caring, witty and self-sacrificing. A son of Poseidon, his name-sake was one of the only heroes to get anything close to resembling a happy ending. This Perseus was a hero, too.
Or, its the year 3010, and the gods have become lazy. They have forgotten their oaths. They do not care anymore, and it shows. There hasn't been a demigod at camp halfblooded in hundreds of years. But one comes, and she meets a legacy, and they will change the course of history.

The fire is fed by the vast selection of belongings that cannot possibly belong to a single person. But there is no one at camp when the son of Hermes arrives, except for Chiron to greet him. The satyrs never confirm or deny anything either. They all just bleat nervously, and say that its dangerous to ask questions.

Annabeth understood the prophecy almost immediately. She knew who it was about and she knew that it would be almost impossible to get him back. There was a war coming. One worse than anything else they had ever faced. They needed him, but he wouldn't care. She was sure of it.
Percy knew about the prophecy. He didn't care. He wasn't going to help, why should he? He was done with that life. But he also knew that you can't outrun a prophecy, not matter how hard you try. Everything would sort itself out... all in due time.
