Dream blinked. "-What?"
“Like,” Techno gestured vaguely with a casual hand, “I know they’ve got their whole like, it’s-not-conscription-but-it-totally-is-conscription, not-mandatory-but-actually-is program thing, but like, how do they get all those children equally willin’ to go attack an enemy that’s like, twenty times more experienced and twice as powerful? Just sayin’, are they snatchin’ the children off the streets at like, two, and then goin’, ‘These are your ABCs, kid, and these are the wonders of blind patriotism, here's your deadly weapon, now don’t disappoint the city! And uh, don’t get murdered, I guess, but that’s like priority number two’? Is that what they’re doin’?”

Summary
Dream doesn't think he's ever been lucky.
The city’s beloved golden hero carries scars no one ever sees—a childhood of hurt, betrayal, a heart armored in solitude; with his sister being one of the only exceptions. He fights the Syndicate, ruthless villains who cause chaos and disruption to Essempi, including his rival, the ever cocky, powerful and deadly Blade. But when Dream ends up saving him from certain death, the line between enemy and ally begins to blur.
Dream doesn't think he's ever been lucky.
But maybe for once the universe would like to prove him wrong.

Dream is the city's #1 hero, with the powers of healing and luck, although he's lived the most unlucky life of all. Somewhere along the way he saves a few villains, and - for some reason - they save him back. Only slightly less angsty than it seems.

By the time the first unwelcome, obnoxiously polished boot hit the main street, Dream was still perched on the rooftop, chin propped up in one hand, wings folded, with one leg dangling over the edge. He didn’t bother standing.
“Heroes!” Dream called down with fake warmth as he peered at the newcomers with sharp eyes. “Captain, Architect, King."
“You’re about… three blocks into my district.” Dream continued, holding up three fingers as if he was explaining counting to a baby. “Which means you’re either incredibly, unbelievably lost, or you’re here to ruin my morning.” He flashed a toothed grin.
“So before we waste everyone’s time, you can all turn around,” His hand morphed into a single fingered twirl, “and walk right back out.”

There was no one left to fight them. Dream was only rank #10. Maybe the youngest ever, but that didn't change that fact. Sapnap and George weren't even top heroes. They shouldn't be fighting The Syndicate. But there was no one else. No one left.
Dream was eighteen years old, and much too young to die.

Dream is the city's greatest contradiction.
To the heroes and civilians of the shining sectors, he is a villain. Dangerous, cruel, a man who can bend literal fear to his will and bring people to their knees without so much as a flick of a finger. But in his own streets, in the Dream District, he is a hero. Their hero, their shield, their savior; more than the heroes of the city have ever been for them, anyway
Dream himself, meanwhile, wants nothing to do with things outside of his own district. He couldn't care less, really. If he had it his way, he'd spend the rest of his days concerned with his people, his allies, and himself, and only that. No matter what sort of new villains-wanted-dead-or-alive initiatives the heroes have been cooking up, or whatever big revolutional, government-toppling plans the Syndicate has in store.
Too bad fate thinks differently.

“SAM!” Tommy shouted once again. Dream bristled as his ears continued to go through another round of suffering from a teenager with a lung capacity too big for his ribcage. “SAM, GET ME OUT OF HERE!! SAM, YOU CAN'T JUST LEAVE ME IN HERE CAUSE ‘Something malfunctioned.’ I KNOW YOU HAVE ENDERPEARLS AND FIRE RES!”
Dream sighed as he stared at Tommy, the teen shouting for Sam or, more specifically, at the lava after the announcement of some Redstone malfunctioning in the prison was heard in the cell. His ears started ringing even more, if that was even possible, as Tommy started another round of screaming for Sam, this time even louder.
Dream knew he should probably tell him that there was no drinkable, cold water that would sooth his sore throat afterwards, but it'd be more amusing watching Tommy's disgusted face as he tried to drink lukewarm, probably soiled, probably boiled, water from the cauldron.
Or, my DreamSMP Phase decided to resurface, and my mind keeps replaying Tommy's time as Dream's roomie. School's starting soon so im lowkey hoping for the AO3 Curse.

“Alright, well right now my partners and I are working on catching a big-time thief.”
“Really?” Dream asked, smiling to himself. Big-time thief means he’s on the leaderboards. Sure, it increases the danger, but the danger is part of what makes being a thief so fun.
Or, Dream is a thief who decides to go undercover as cop. Like those Tommy vigilante fics except instead of Tommy, it's Dream, and instead of a vigilante, he's a thief, and instead of SBI, it's Dream team.

Wilbur flopped onto the couch, legs stretched out as he grabbed his phone.
“You get the smaller room which is on the left there.” Wilbur pointed to a small, narrow hallway that had three doors in total. “The bathroom is across from your door. Rent’s due on the first.”
Dream raised a brow. “That’s it? No interview? No rules?”
Wilbur turned on the television in front of him with a remote. “I don’t care what you do as long as you pay your share. Just don’t touch my stuff.”
Dream considered that. No fake niceties, no over-the-top friendliness. Just two people coexisting. It was perfect.
“Alright, deal.” Dream said. “Should I come back tomorrow morning with my stuff?”
Wilbur waved him off. “Sure, sure. I’ll also give you a copy of the keys tomorrow too.”
It was almost too perfect.
He should’ve known there was a catch.

Dream gets a roommate who's a little more than he could handle... Wait- what do you mean his roommate is a villain? Say what? Oh- and lil note but Dream has a pretty powerful ability... yep- this is going to end totally fine.

Summary
Everyone has looked at least once at that blank mask and wondered “What kind of face is Dream actually making?”. They had come up with a variety of answers across the years: joy, pride, anger, disgust, mockery... Little did they know, they were rarely ever right.
These misunderstandings may be part of the reasons that landed him in Pandora's vault.
But afterwards, rescued from arguably worse than hell, effectively shut away from the world with his last allies, maybe it is time for some masks to be put down, for some secrets to show. Maybe it is time for Dream to allow himself to heal.
And to finally stretch these wings again. Out in the open this time._____
