When Jason glances over at Percy, however, he doesn’t look disheartened. In fact, it’s unfortunately more of the opposite — his eyes are narrowed in challenge, like he thinks he’ll be able to dissolve Annabeth’s holy matrimony with the power of his handsome looks. Not that Jason doubts it – quite the opposite, in fact. Percy is good-looking, and funny, and charming. Even Jason might be tempted to end a marriage if he were on the receiving end of that, and he’s not even attracted to men. But he likes Percy, and he likes Annabeth, and the last thing he wants as a good friend is for Percy to become a home wrecker.
“Percy, no,” he warns.
But Percy is already nodding his head. “Let’s make a bet,” he says.
Grover, who’s just finished wiping tears out of his eyes, bursts out laughing all over again. “For you to get with Annabeth? Percy!” He’s got a laugh a lot like a goat-bleat. It’s really quite charming.
Percy folds his arms in challenge. “I bet that I can get with Annabeth by Thanksgiving.”

Like a rallying cry, campers started pouring out of the woodworks and Jake took a step back.
“Hey,” a tall blond boy yelled, “don’t crowd him! Back up, back up…”
“Oh, come off it, Luke,” a girl rolled her eyes, “you’re only chill because you’re probably going to get the story first!”
“Um,” Jake swallowed, “story?”
Chiron tried his best to shoo the campers away with a disappointed stare, but while a few of them shrank back, most stood firm.
“Yes,” a younger blond girl folded her arms, eyeing him, “we want to know about your encounter with the wandering swordsman.”

There's a demigod out there, somewhere, that no one can find. But because of him (and his really, really shitty swords), demigods who otherwise wouldn't have, have made it to camp. A daughter of Dionysus, a son of Apollo, a daughter of Athena, at least one in every cabin.
Where is he? Who is he?
(Percy thinks everyone's being dramatic. He's not that cool, and Kelli is more than happy to tell him that. Frequently. Ugh.)

Ozone fills the air and the classroom hushes. Alice has a feeling of being watched, of eyes staring at the back of her hair, making every single nerve-ending rise up. She swallows, her throat feeling like gravel. It’s like there’s a predator in the room with its attention focused completely on how much it wants to devour her.
“What is the meaning of this?”
There’s a man by the entrance of the classroom. The style of his clothes is similar to those of her students’ wealthy families and he stands with the confidence and self-assurance of the president of the country. The man’s eyes scan the room, not pausing until they stop on the small figure of Perseus Jackson.
