A gentle touch. A smile. A phrase spoken in a soft tone. The slightest act of affection would make Dogman his—Petey knew that perfectly well. He was desperate for his love, so obviously it hurt. But Petey’s soul wasn’t ready to return that love, and it never would be. The thought of giving him hope felt criminally wrong. It felt like robbing Ohkay’s first bank while laughing in everyone’s face. Euphoric and miserable all at once. Dogman’s heart was the city’s greatest treasure—on display and unguarded, with nothing to shield it. His for the taking, if only he dared to stretch out a paw and claim it.

Petey and his son are staying over at Dogman's place while their lab is being rebuilt. Everything's been going fine and Petey's getting used to this quiet, domestic life, even if temporary. That is until things take a turn for the worst when his heat comes unexpectedly early this year. He has to swallow his shame and deal with this like a responsible adult.

Summary
Everyone in Ohkay City knew the basic story that was put out into the news; a bomb was set by Petey, The World's Most Evilest Cat, Officer Knight and his dog Greg were blown up, and Greg's head was sewn onto Knight's body to create Dogman. But no one in Ohkay City knew the pain Greg went through to be united with friend from the neck down. No one knew the things he had been subjected to. And that's how Greg wants it to be. No one can know about that shame. No one at all.
Across Ohkay City in a dilapidated apartment building, Petey is desperately trying to figure out what could have possibly happened to Lil Petey. Petey had just been out of his apartment for a little bit. Where in the world was his son? Deciding that freaking out isn't an option, he calls the police department to report his son missing and packs up to get help from the only person he could trust with a problem this terrifying.
Two sad beings in a world of hatred and ruin find love and acceptance in each other and begin a life neither of them thought they would ever have while finding the child that brought them together.

A sudden malfunction of one of his inventions creates a bigger problem. Petey loses parts of his memories, his evil acts vanish into thin air for him. For some reason, the only face he remembers is that of Dog Man, but he can't figure out why.
