Summary
From what Louis had told him, Daniel had pictured Lestat as a Frenchman in his late-thirties, pug-faced, maybe a little balding, and permanently red in the face from the burst capillaries that come with too much drinking and smoking. The truth is a bit of a hard punch to his stomach, an uncomfortable tightness in his throat.
Daniel has worked too hard on his relationship with Louis to let some French asshole take his place.

He only manages to read Lestat de Lioncourt spotted having a steamy makeout session under the Tuscan sun with in the split second before a pop-up ad obscures the headline, and the cover photo loads.
It’s a pixelated shot of two people locked in an intimate embrace on a small, vaguely familiar balcony with a wrought iron balustrade. The first person, who’s facing the camera full-on and smirking indulgently, is Lestat. He means to say it with rueful annoyance, as if to say, “so he ruined him.” But as Daniel’s text comes in—the most important question I should have asked you in that fucking interview: where do you buy coke in Dubai?—Louis’s voice trails off, his words maybe lacking some of the bite.

Louis had tried to quit in the months leading up to her coming home with them, but as it turns out giving up multiple coping mechanisms at once during a time of complete upheaval is not the easiest task. And so their shared cigarette had become a little indulgence that they allowed themselves in the quiet hours of 1132 Rue Royal.
