At first she thought they were merely shadows, she’s not used to having fucking curtains on her windows, still feels like a luxury, sue her. But the longer she stared at them, the clearer they got. They weren’t shadows, they were fucking ghosts. Honest to God ghosts.

“Yeah, I reckon I did.” He whispers the same way, a grin expanding over his face as she laughs openly.
“You didn’t- You didn’t have to do that.” Shrugging, he leans over the counter.
“You told me once you’ve never had a cake. So what better time to try it out than your birthday, huh?” She stares up at him as if he’s given her the greatest gift of her life and his heart expands.

“Is it always like that with her?” His attention shifts quickly from a gleeful kid, playing around the newest addition to the family, to his younger brother, handing him the closest thing to beer the town has to offer.
“Like what?” He takes a sip. It’s cold at least, a much needed sensation under the warm sun of early summer.
“You know, like…” The younger Miller leans back on his porch chair, arm over the backrest, his eyes never leaving the girl carefully playing around with his young son. “Like one day she despises every single one of us and the next she can’t get enough of our company.” His gaze also lingers on the young pair, his palms cold from the drink he’s holding, not even caring about the many droplets of condensation running down his skin.
“She gets like that sometimes.” Is all he offers, not really sure how else to explain something he doesn’t really understand himself.

Sunday dinners just sort of happen to Ellie without her even noticing the pattern. It starts their first Sunday in Jackson, just one week in, and by the time the weather warms up, a month has gone by and Ellie’s eaten at Tommy and Maria’s house every week. Maria is about ready to pop and Tommy keeps badgering her to sit down while he finishes cooking. They’re bickering with two big dumb grins on their faces when Ellie turns to Joel and asks, “Why do you guys do this every week? Don’t you get tired of it?”
Joel pauses. “It’s a family tradition,” he says, musing, like he’s never considered it before. “Growin’ up, Tom and I ate every damn meal together. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Our mama would cook, so we’d do the dishes and set the table and all. So, food is - it’s real important to the family. You sit together for meals ‘cause some days it’d be the only time you made time for each other. When things get busy, you forget what’s important. You eat together, because you love each other.”

Now that she mentions it, she does recognize the name. The Erikson boys are nice enough, one older than her, one younger. Both humongous. Just like their mother, who is towering over Ellie as they speak.
“That’s…nice,” Ellie says, uncomfortable. “But, um. Why?”
Mrs. Erikson smiles. “Because, dear. I thought it would be good for us all to get to know each other. Seeing as Tommy Miller came and talked to us about the possibility of you coming to live with us.”

Summary
If Ellie was anything other than nervous to the point of shitting her pants, she might laugh at the way Joel’s entire expression slackens with shock. To his credit, he recovers quickly, and folds his arms across his chest, leaning some of his weight against the rail. It’s such a Joel stance that Ellie finds herself mapping out how she would sketch it, tracing the details of him with her eyes.
“Well that depends. What movie are we watchin?’”
At that, a real smile splits Ellie’s face. “Curtis and Viper II.”
