Two years after the death of Nanako Dojima, the Investigation Team has gone their separate ways. They are forced back together again once the murders in the forever foggy town of Inaba start again, desperate to solve the case that drove them together and forced them apart. Trauma, regrets, and unspoken feelings plague the now broken members, and they will do anything to fix their greatest mistake. With a missing leader, no access to the TV world, and their personas completely gone, it all seems hopeless. But there has never been a case that Naoto Shirogane hasn't solved. This will not be the first.
(Set in the universe where the Investigation Team decided to throw Taro Namatame into the TV world after the death of Nanako Dojima.)

“Fall asleep, Kokichi.” He remembers. “Your sorrows will burn away like a wildfire.”

Snowflakes fall.
Shuichi looks to the sky, a pale blue shade peeking through a rapid snowstorm spiraling around him like dancing ballerinas. His head bows, and with it the snow builds at his feet.
Each breath hurts, like icy tendrils are strangling his lungs.
“Fall asleep, Shuichi.” He remembers. “Your sorrows will turn to dust like snow in the summer.”

It came quietly in the form of a classmate. Blank faced, silent, and daunting as the classmate made sense of the new world around him, much like Shuichi on the other side of the glass. Then, Shuichi’s world shattered like the window pane as his first zombie crashed through. Anyone but Kokichi would’ve served great as his saving grace, but life’s ironic like that. Shuichi wanted anything except to be alone, so he’d suffer through this apocalypse with Kokichi if it saved him from loneliness.
He egged it on. He knew he did, but he didn’t deserve to die over his teasing habits. How was Kokichi supposed to know that his classmate wasn’t kidding around? How was he supposed to know zombies couldn’t handle a joke? Kokichi fled out in front of the school and found Shuichi alone. Kokichi wanted anything except to die, so he’d suffer through this apocalypse with Shuichi if it meant someone covered his back.

Himari should’ve known better. Truly - she should’ve. When you put D.I.C.E. in one room and assign them a task, there’d be hell to pay. Whether it be literal hell (that was a fun night!) or a metaphorical pit of fire, D.I.C.E. had a way of making the absolute worst out of any given situation. Even if the odds were stacked in their favor, or if perhaps there was a null chance of failure, they would find the correct path to absolute doom and destruction.
As Himari stared into a torrent of fire, she cradled her head in her hands. Mayumi, her partner-in-planning, had long since left her side to assault Reo.

Tsumugi had taken that as an empty threat. He was a boy who was in over his head and thought he could "save" the world. He was a stupid, naive boy. She was amused by him. She thought he'd make an amazing rival.
He was much smarter than she gave him credit for. He switched the files. He made himself, a character pre-programmed to be a prolific liar, the protagonist of the season. He made that detective the rival. And finally, he made Tsumugi much, much more determined to produce the greatest season that Danganronpa had ever seen.
