Summary
While working with Tony in the garage at the Stark's cabin Peter sees a tattoo peeking out from under his mentor's sleeve. He's seen it before, back when the man was recovering in Wakanda but he'd forgotten about it until that moment. When he decides to ask about it, he finds out that there is more to the design than he'd thought, leading to some confusing feelings and a late-night conversation.
Tony talks to Peter about the five years that he was gone and does his best to help Peter understand how much he was missed and how much he is loved.

Stephen's already explained that there was no way to bring someone back to life with them. Bringing back half the universe was easy, as they hadn't been dead, merely... hidden away for a while.
He would die, he thinks, if he tried.
(He thinks someone should. Try, that is. Thor, or Carol, or Bruce, once he's better. It's selfish, he knows, but he can't help but think it. He wonders if Pepper thinks it too.)

Tony knew it was hopeless. He would never see the kid again. He needed to move on. They all did. They could never lead relatively normal lives grieving half the universe. He needed to take Pepper, and maybe Happy, and run. Take what he had left. Take every remanent part of Peter Parker and bury it.
One day, Peter would forget what it felt like to sit next to Tony on his lab bench, covered in motor oil and running on yesterday’s breakfast. He’d forget the sound of his laugh, and they way he would pretend not to smile when Peter made an obscure reference. But he’d remember the way it felt to come home to May, finally conquering the kitchen. He’d remember the look on Morgan’s face when she came home with an A on a test, the sound of her laughter when she finally understood one of Peter’s movie references. And that was enough.

“You know. Spider-Man.” Tony takes a nonchalant bite of his pasta.
“Who?” Pepper repeats.
“It’ll come to you, honey.”
Suddenly, it does. “The creepy sticky one!” Pepper exclaims, with a snap of her finger. “How does he do that, anyways?”
“Oh, wait till I relay that little gem, he’ll die of embarrassment,” Tony guffaws.
Pepper frowns. “Why? He’s probably heard worse. If you’re going to crawl around in spandex you’ve got to have a thicker skin than that.”
“He’s young,” Tony says airily, waving his hand. “He’ll grow into it.”
That’s nice, Pepper thinks. Mentoring a young superhero seems pretty harmless, out of all the things Tony could be using to distract himself right now.
