Summary
“You wouldn’t happen to know what time it is, would you?” Fjord says.
Caleb heaves an extremely put-upon sigh. “Of course,” he says. With some difficulty, Caleb lifts Frumpkin fully off the table and holds him in front of his face with a look of stern consideration. Frumpkin stares back at him, beleaguered as only a spoiled cat can be.
“Quarter past seven,” Caleb announces, and sets the cat down. Frumpkin makes an affronted noise and settles back down, and Caleb scratches the scruff of his neck affectionately.
“Uh,” Fjord says.
Throughout their travels together, Fjord discovers something odd about Caleb's ability to tell the time.

Summary
Molly spits the blood in Lorenzo's face and watches his expression sour.
He hears him say, “Respect,” and feels the blade twist. Knows, fundamentally, as readily as he knows his own name most days, that there is no surviving something that feels like this.
No, he tries to say, but his lips do not move. No, not yet—
His consciousness fades, an ever-shrinking point of light in a sea of endless black. Molly flails, lashing motionlessly out for anything at all, and among wordless curses and pleas, he steels himself one more time, grits his teeth or thinks he does, and demands, No.
Molly dies. Molly wakes up. Molly dies. Molly wakes up. Molly dies. Molly wakes up.
Some paths are not meant to be trod so thin.

Summary
Lae'zel doesn’t even appear to be greatly winded as she yanks her sword away, then surveys the battlefield for any remaining threats.
Gale, himself, is breathing heavily and- ah.
Well. No one has ever accused him of being unmoved by a deft hand.
During a harrowing encounter in the Underdark, Gale finds himself more than usually appreciative of his companion's skills.

Summary
“Will it,” he says. “I mean. This is- a very great honor. I am honored, to take the Beam within me. To be- trusted to carry it.” He swallows. “Will it hurt?”
His grandmother’s face softens. The tattoo of Filament crinkles around her eyes as she gives him a gentle smile.
“Oh, Wicky,” she says. “Of course it will.”

Summary
If Essek were to kill Caleb, he would do it with a spell.
None of the intimate agony of feeling the last flutters of his heart with his own skin. He cannot even afford himself the painful honesty of knowing that if he were to do it, it would be impersonal and practiced, something Essek has done to many before and will do to many others. This knowledge is not enough to stop him imagining it.
In the months following the events of Cognouza and the Somnovem, Essek fails to come to terms with the fact that he is a dangerous man.

Summary
“Lorroakan is unworthy of you,” he says. Rolan sneers, but for once, he doesn’t fight him on the point. “He’s a brute, and a coward.”
Gale allows himself a smirk, just a small one. “And tomorrow, we’re going to kill him.”
His golden eyes blow wide for a moment. Then, of all things—he laughs. Bitter, ugly, heavy.
"No, you're not.”
In which one touch-starved wizard meets one sardonic, yearning wizard and they finally stop dancing around each other after murdering a different wizard. Get loved, idiots.

Summary
“I’ve been in town about two weeks now,” he starts. Cecil nods enthusiastically. “And I keep hearing… okay, it’s just. Whatever, I just keep hearing people call each other their husbands and wives?”
Cecil takes a sip, waiting for more, and then tugs his straw out of his mouth when he realizes that’s all he’ll get without prompting. “Yep,” he agrees, popping the last letter. “That’s what people call each other when they’re married in Night Vale. Is it the marriage thing that’s confusing? I know it’s kind of an outdated concept, it started back when families would exchange blood to merge—”
“No, I understand what marriage is. That exists outside of this town,” Carlos interrupts. “I mean that I keep hearing two woman call each other their wives. Or two men call each other their husbands.”
“Mhm,” Cecil murmurs, folding his hands under his chin as he nods. “They’re married, then.”
“Cecil,” Carlos finally snaps, frustrated that he’s not being understood. Cecil furrows his brow, and somehow his third eye even looks concerned. “That’s not legal here.”

Summary
“We ventured too far, considering our unexpectedly low number.” Essek turns his face against the light, as if to let it cleanse some unwanted quality from his expression. Instead, he looks carved in bone, immortalized in frowning marble. “There were … traps. Perfectly clever ones. Still functioning.”
—--------
Essek tries and fails and tries to save the man he loves.
