“They muzzled me, okay?” Nick kept talking, as if the words had slipped free before he could reel them back in.
“I was nine,” he said, staring at the floor. “I thought… I don’t know. I thought if I joined them maybe I’d belong somewhere.” His voice cracked. “They didn’t even let me finish the oath. Then they held me down... They laughed at me.”
An absence settled in his eyes. "I didn't even get to finish the oath.”

Nick wasn't in it for the case. Actually, he didn't even join the ZPD because of some noble reason like "wanting to help those who needed it" or "deliver justice to evildoers". He just didn't have it in him.
