Summary
When they 'save' Ash from Foxx, Shorter immediately knows that they're already too late.
Not too late, he reminds himself. Ash is still alive.
He has to tell himself that that's something. Even if it doesn't feel like much, when he looks at the way Ash reacts to Cain simply reaching for him—trying to check his injuries.
Shorter watches, taking note of how Eiji and Jessica seem to notice as well. Eiji exchanges a glance with Shorter, and Shorter can see the panic in his eyes. The pain in his eyes.
It's a horrifying realization—almost a quarter as horrifying as realizing that this has happened to Ash again, again again again—when it dawns on Shorter that he's the only one here who's seen Ash like this before. That he's ... he's used to this. And he's going to have to be the one to comfort Ash, to undress him and dress his wounds.
This has always been Shorter's battle to fight. He decided that a long time ago. He just ... kind of hoped the battle was won.
Shorter is around to help after Ash's encounter with Foxx.

Summary
I’m not falling, Mac recited to himself internally, I was falling, I’m not anymore.
It wasn’t as comforting as he’d hoped it would be. Neither was the knowledge that the piton pulling free was technically it doing its job. It slowed his fall just enough for the next one to catch him. It was the same idea as the design of the rope, stitching meant to fail, meant to allow the rope to stretch to an extra twenty-five percent of its original length. Safety features. Mac had been running the math of it through his head from the moment his fingers grazed the cliffside. It all should’ve been reassuring, but thinking of them just meant Mac was picturing falling over and over again. His stomach flipped, as if it was still resettling. He rested his forehead against the rope.
“Mac?” Finally something pierced the deafening rush of blood through Mac’s temples, Jack’s concerned voice from far below. “I got ya, buddy. You good up there?”
