    "Ma chérie," Ada whispered into her neck like an aphorism, eyes shut and fingers tightened around her waist, and the words poured into her like eucalyptus oil on Druvis's bleeding skin and inside her mouth, flowing into her lungs like a slurry into an anaerobic lagoon. They carved sinkholes into her eardrums with the deceitful innocence of a child spilling jam onto a fur coat. "I will never be sorry enough."

    The convicted cannot help but cherish the world they reside in before the act of execution, and perhaps that was why Druvis forced herself to keep her senses open; to hear every gasp that left Ada’s mouth, watch every stutter of her hips, and swallow in each fleeting moment that Ada allowed herself to exist before Druvis' eyes.
