There were exits in life.
The knowledge had settled into him then, and it had settled into him permanently. Most children discovered love, or fear, or religion, and held onto it for the rest of their lives, letting it shape all their choices. But standing there, Ilya had discovered contingency. He’d decided that if things became unbearable for long enough, there was always a way out.
Now, there was the option to stay, and keep going. And there was the option to go back to Russia, and keep going. But then, there was also the third option. Always there, waiting for him if he ever decided to take it.

But everything will be fine, right? All he has to do is pretend everything is normal.
