In the black, twin points of glowing red appear, fierce and burning eyes that stop Lan Wangji in his tracks. He stares, swallowing thickly, before taking another step. This one is met with a growl, almost like an animal and hardly like a man.
“Get out.”
The voice is low, dripping with warning, and Wangji thinks that listening might be wise.
“No,” he says instead.
The bodiless voice laughs, a haunting thing that echoes in the stone walls.
“They sent me such a pretty young master,” it drawls. Wangji can almost feel the voice caressing his skin, and shivers. “Shame on them.”
(The Yiling Patriarch is taken captive. Lan Wangji is tasked with keeping his power at bay.)

Possibly visitors from other races are very disapproving because they assume that 'getting his hair fixed' is a euphemism. Possibly it is. (When they're talking about Fili, it almost certainly is.) And the team assigned to Kili are on the verge of a nervous breakdown. ("Just one braid, please, your highness!").

He did not die with Jin Guangyao, physically. But he had still turned into a ghost of himself, the melancholy that had swallowed him and the haze of unreality he lost himself in, haunted by the past. Using the array, tearing his souls apart into whatever had made the journey, had simply completed the process, made him truly possess himself.
