The Wild and the Apotheosis are two of the strongest vessels, they can break the construct. When the Shifting Mound is a bit late on retrieving her gift of a Tender Heart, the Nightmare grows to receive this strength, too.
But all she knows is how to hurt…
And so she does. She breaks the Long Quiet. Not mentally, or spiritually, or even just his will. She breaks him in a terrible, pragmatic way.
Like the Sleeping Mound, they can hope to rebuild him from the Paranoid voice that survives. Together, the Paranoid and the Nightmare must bring Voices to the Long Quiet, and Vessels to the Shifting Mound.
Hilarity ensues.

The looped structure of If-Then-Else is impossible to ignore. The simplified simulation lampoons the common elements but otherwise, it's the variable elements that stand out. Of these, Shaw's trials with the would-be suicide-bomber are some of the most dramatic. Her repeated attempts to defuse his rage and despair tie into the episode's titular theme of choices and consequences, as well as into the show's continued exploration of empathy.

Mesmerized, Riza drifted through the room and out the open glass doors to what was admittedly a very nice patio. It was large, with a iron-wrought table and chairs near the doors, a few potted plants, and an actual sofa towards the other end. Bypassing the furniture entirely, she walked to the rail and settled her elbows on it to wait for the next eruption.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” she breathed, as Roy came to stand next to her, elbow barely brushing hers.
