    Summary

“Need word,” Rocky says in baby-talk Eridian for me. The translator dutifully repeats “need word” in English a second later.

After fifteen minutes of bewildering back and forth between the three of us, we determine the word he needs is “declension.”

A year into the journey to Erid, Grace faces down his most formidable academic gauntlet since astrophage: the five-part polyphonic Eridian language. It’s only fair after Rocky mastered English, human mannerisms, Grace mannerisms- without so much as one complaint. And if learning Eridian might temper some of Grace’s desperate, near-complete dependence on Rocky in the future… well. That’s his own business.

Eridian breaks Grace’s brain, heart, and soul- and puts it back together.

    Summary

James "Rocky" Rockwell has to leave his dream job at NASA due to an episode he would rather not speak about. He moves to San Fransisco to begin his new career, and stops at a little diner on the way to his new apartment. There, he sees someone incredibly familiar, though they have never met before.
Not in this lifetime, at least.

Memories come flooding back to Rocky of an entirely different life he lived. The universe has given him the chance to reunite with the person he holds closest to his heart. And the one who is currently holding him up on the diner floor, telling someone that he needs an ambulance. Rocky grips the sleeve of his cardigan, calls Grace's name, and Grace holds onto him tighter.

    Does he remember, too?

    Summary

Softly, you admitted, "It reminds me of us, a little. Sometimes I wonder if our meeting was fate. If it was written in red, somewhere in the stars."

    "Red," I repeated. "Like astrophage."

If our meeting was truly written in the red of astrophage, then it would mean that the stars started dying for us—that the entire galaxy mourned for them by singing a dirge, and it was loud enough to be heard in the vast silence of the Big Nothing.

Perhaps the universe was torn in two a long time ago and is trying to pull the broken halves back together. For everything comes from stardust, from planets and moons to humans and Eridians. For across trillions of miles' worth of space and billions of years' worth of time, we existed at just the right parameters to have met each other. Then, perhaps the universe made me to love you, and perhaps the universe made you to be loved.

Perhaps that is what you call fate.

Or: Grace confesses his love. Rocky struggles to do the same, though not for the reasons you might think.

"Did I say something wrong?" Adrian asks, stepping towards him again. "Grace?"

He sucks in a harsh breath and blinks, turning his head away and hanging it low, near his chest. "Jesus…”

    "Grace?”

"Sorry," his head pops up again, and his heart seems to be fighting to calm down. "Sorry, just—woof. That's the most intense déjà vu I've had in a minute."

“What? You’re not wanting to actually do this soap opera appearance, are you?” Rocky asked.

Grace’s ears pulsed with blood flow and he gave a twitch of a shrug.

“I mean…kinda?” he said. “I love As Erid Turns.”

    Rocky turned to Adrian.

    “Well?”

“Well, what? I think he should do it,” Adrian said placidly.

“Adrian! Grace is not some—cheap floozy of an entertainer! He’s a respected interstellar scientist!”
