Of course the expectation is always the exact opposite of the truth.
Because Eddie’s gotten this taste of fame, right? They’re not topping all the charts but they’re topping some of the charts and that’s wild, that’s so far beyond anything he ever imagined, that’s the kind of shit that breeds jealousy: people know he’s taken—of course they don’t know how or by who, but the people who matter know who holds the whole of him in his hands.
And Steve knows, when he sees a tabloid mention the band, or mention someone else mentioning the band—Steve knows there’s no threat there. Not your type, in Steve’s words, shrugged off as inconsequential; Steve’s not jealous. He understands that Eddie’s type is this one beautiful man who saved the world at his side, who fought demons, who held his hand, his body, and holds his heart so safe and sure and is Eddie’s whole world—yeah.
Eddie’s type is Steve and Steve alone.
But people would probably expect Steve to be the jealous one.
People are real fucking stupid.

Eddie watches Jonathan Byers with his limp hair and baggie hoodie bustle around Adonis and mutter instructions as he clicks away on his camera.
Adonis says something. Byers turns the camera and beckons him over, and then they’re both leaning over the display, faces so close their cheeks almost touch. Byers points at something and Adonis huffs a laugh - a short, near-silent thing that makes Byers’s fringe move.
“Hold that for me,” Eddie says and gives Gareth his cigarette.

Steve stares down into big blue eyes looking up at him. Familiar, yet the boy he has his arms wrapped tight around is too small. Too tiny to be the fifteen-year-old beta he swears he was yanking through the gate.
But the gaping teeth, unruly curls, and the now oversized clothes are unmistakable.
“Henderson?” Steve questioned in disbelief. The teeny pup, possibly seven or eight, simply tilts his head and his small hands curl into Steve’s polo. His eyes begin to water, his lower lip quivering.

Steve’s thoroughly grateful that he’s listening to a message, and no response is required—can only stand there, jaw slack, at just how light his mother’s voice is.
“A couple of work things fell through,” she continues with a breeziness that probably means several major ‘things’ went disastrously wrong, work related or otherwise. But it doesn’t sound like she cares all that much; if anything, she sounds excited.
“So I thought we could—well, I don’t know how late we’ll be, but if you’re not too hungry, we could just order some pizza, lazy dinner? Plain cheese for you, right?” The distant ring of a bell on a counter. “Steve, darling, I know we haven’t been—” She cuts herself off with a sigh that’s gone too quickly for Steve to parse.
He hasn’t ordered a plain cheese pizza since he was 12 years old. But she’s trying, he thinks. She’s trying.
