Summary
Three days out from Jinlintai, Wei Wuxian’s theory that a stab wound in the abdomen was “just a hole in his body” was about to be proven wrong.
But the wound wasn’t anything Dr. Gregory House couldn’t handle. Except that he was in a fictional hospital somewhere in New Jersey, not in mythical ancient China. He was on call, though.
“Stop there,” Wei Ying said, pointing at nothing. “There’s a shrine.” Lan Wangji landed among the trees. There was no shrine. He was pretty sure Wei Ying had a fever. Maybe he was delirious.
Wei Ying staggered toward the shrine.
Wei Wuxian probably hallucinated the portal that appeared in the shrine’s entry, but it worked anyway. Lan Wangji followed him.

There is something wrong, glaringly wrong, that Nie Mingjue can’t place. He coughs and covers his eyes with bloodied fingers, groaning against the light. He wills his head to stop spinning, wills his mind to start working.
The smell is awful, stale. It nudges at the edge of his memory, familiar in a way he can’t put his finger on. He breathes in through his nose too deeply; it sends him into another heaving fit, head pounding with the movement of his body.
Blood, he realizes all at once, his hair standing on edge. The smell is blood.

Nie Mingjue wakes up in a new body, and there is a message left for him to find: STOP THE CHIEF CULTIVATOR.

“You found an injured cultivator from an enemy sect, took him in and treated him. Now that he’s getting better, who’s to say he won’t attack you?”
Wen Qing sets down her brush, finally turning to look at him. Nie Mingjue leans forward.
“I should think the Nie Zhongzhu would have more honor than that,” Wen Qing sniffs.
He does, but she couldn’t have known that when she found him. “Suppose he didn’t. What then?”
At the height of the Sunshot Campaign, Nie Mingjue and Wen Qing meet.

Fuck you. The words are half her brother’s and half her mother’s and as such they don’t cross her lips.
Using the Yiling Laozu's notes to bring Jiang Yanli back turns out to be the best worst mistake Xue Yang has ever made.
