The flames licked at his skin as he sat there in his chair. The black fabric catching fire far more easily than the metal surrounding him and Michael watches with morbid curiosity.
Banging on the warped metal door starts. Michael is just lucky that the door isn’t breaking from whatever animatronic outside his . . . room. The banging gets less aggressive and more frantic by the time Michael can feel the heat touching his skin.

Summary

There were times after Rocky moved into the Hail Mary when Grace would be hunched over an experiment, struggling to make things work; struggling to find the solution that Tau Ceti held, then struggling to grow nitrogen-resistant Taumoeba faster. Sometimes he would sit staring at the farm-tanks, slouched in his chair with his hands dangling over his knees, and whisper to himself. “Please,” he would say. “Please, please, please.”
“Who is Grace talking to?” Rocky had asked in the stilted way he’d been stuck with at the time.
“No one,” Grace had shrugged. “Or anyone. Anyone who’ll listen.”
Rocky does not understand humans. But now, he sits on the shore of an infant sea, a brand-new constructed world all around him just waiting for its single lonely occupant to take control of it, and wonders if human senselessness is worth a shot.
“Please,” he whispers, running his claw through the water. “Please, please, please.”
The sea does not respond.

When Tony boarded the hull of the Skeld and watched the stars begin to drift by through the viewport, he only had one task on his mind: Kill all crewmates.
It was a simple mission. He’d done it a dozen times before, and this would be no different. Take them down one by one, manipulate them into turning against each other, and if things got bad, let his partner take the fall for all their crimes. It was an ironclad plan; destined to succeed.
But what his plan didn’t account for was the small, young astronaut that came barreling up to his side, eyes practically beaming behind his helmet that seemed far too large for his stature as he introduced himself.
“I’m Peter, by the way.”
Tony stared down at the kid’s gloved hand for a moment and thought about ignoring him. It would make it easier, wouldn’t it? He shouldn’t even be talking to the kid, not when he was going to… to…
Suddenly Tony gripped Peter’s hand and shook it, saying shortly “Tony.”
