It’s such an absurd statement that Michaela barked out an indignant laugh, hand coming up to rest on her chest. She thinks she preens under her gaze, seemingly proud that she was able to make her laugh with such a sentence.
However, hearing her speak for the first time, Michaela thinks she understood, now, why she was silent for such a long time. She took a careful step forward, bringing her hand up to her metal visor. “May I?” Michaela asked gently, “I just want to see something.”
The knight cleared her throat, “Do I have a choice?”
“Of course you do,” Michaela answered, pulling her hand back a fraction. “You can say no and I will move on. I was just curious.”
She heard the knight swallow harshly, the metal of her armor squeaking when she nodded her head after a terse moment. “Okay,” She said, voice quiet. “You may, Your Highness.”

A phone call that shocks Francesca from her deep sleep, blinking confused and discombobulated in the dark.
She registers her phone ringing on her nightstand with a jolt, and crawls out of the warm nest of blankets, flinging an arm over and answering without even glancing at the caller ID. Her voice is hoarse, brimming over with sleep as she clears her throat and mutters, “Hello?”
“Frannie,” Michaela breathes on the other end.
All of a sudden Francesca’s wide awake.
Or: Michaela’s apartment floods. She moves in with Francesca until it gets fixed. And that should’ve been fine, right? It might be just a trick of a hopeless romantic’s mind (and what has Michaela become, that she thinks of herself as such) that she thinks she hears disappointment in Francesca’s voice, but it is a trick that she wants to believe in.
Michaela knows that it is a fancy that she should not speak, except:
“Come with me back to Scotland. I shall set you up in your own set of rooms, with your pianoforte, with your puzzles, and you shall have all of the space and quiet that you wish for."
