Summary
"So, Rumi," Zoey's mother begins, so sweet and benign and unaware of the massive headache she was about to gracefully bestow upon Rumi. "Are you seeing anyone?"
It's an innocent question. Just one of those things that parents ask their daughter's friends. She asks it while Rumi helps herself to a delectable serving of galbi jjim, piling cuts of the meat onto her plate, and Rumi almost fumbles her chopsticks and drops a piece.
It's just a yes or no question.
Rumi, however, stops and very eloquently says: "Um."
OR: When Zoey's cousin invites all three of them to California for his wedding, Zoey is forced to navigate her and Rumi's newly-found feelings for each other while staying at her parents' house for four days. Zoey's trying not to explode, Rumi is an awkward, blushing mess, and Mira thinks it's the funniest shit ever. Will they manage to survive Costco, nosy family members in a backyard barbecue, a bachelor party, and the wedding day itself?

"Oh we're live!" Zoey's eyes flick up to the camera, her smile widening and both hands coming up to wave vigorously.
The chat explodes in greetings.
Rumi remains close to the camera, her brows furrowed together. "How do you know we're live?"
Zoey gestures at something off screen, "Because I hit that," and then she points over to something in the corner that makes Rumi visibly balk. "And because everyone is saying hi."
Rumi blinks slowly, "That's moving very fast."
Zoey lets out a laugh that is equal parts fond as it is amused. She reaches across Rumi for the mouse, faint clicking audible before she's addressing the chat. "Guys, baby's first stream! How do we feel?"

Summary

Rumi shrugs, feeling raw and exposed in the way she always does after kneeling for them.
She considers the question: she just wasn’t brought up that way. There was never any need for praise or affirmation as a form of encouragement. Not when there were other forms so readily available – imminent choking forms, creeping steadily across her body.

Summary
Letting someone into your head means letting them know you to your core, and then losing them means being alone in a way you never could have been before.
Ranger Ryu Rumi, former pilot of the legendary Mark IV jaeger Demon Song and a survivor of the Jaeger Program's golden age, before everything went wrong and the war turned against them, has paid that price. Once the pride of the Shatterdome, now she's scarred and alone, and the sheer weight of the loss has her resigned to that fate.
So failed cadets Mira and Zoey, humanity’s last hope, have no place in her lonely world. But with the Breach growing more active again, Rumi is forced to return to the Shatterdome to teach them how to love what she lost, and to hold on to each other harder than anyone outside of the Drift ever could.
But the Drift is a tricky thing, it calls to the heart and soul, so they start to want to hold on to her too, even as she tries to stay away. Because the Drift already ruined her once, and she doesn't have the strength to risk it happening again.

Summary
This was, without a doubt, Mira's worst nightmare.
The woman to her left leant over her for the fourth time to talk to the person on her right, and Mira tore her headphones down - her over-ear, very expensive, noise cancelling headphones that apparently were completely useless when faced with whatever actual nonsense this woman was saying to her friend - to sit around her neck so she could say with venom, “Please switch seats with me. I'm begging you.”
“It's not allowed,” the purple-haired woman on her right said, her hands visibly tense on the armrests. On Mira's armrest. Everyone knew the person in the middle seat got both armrests. Fuck AirAsia for charging for allocated seating. “If you're not in your assigned seats they can't identify you from your teeth when you die.”
The ‘I'm stuck in the middle seat of an airplane and these two idiots won't swap seats to sit next to each other’ AU. Established Zorumi, a very grumpy Mira, and a six hour flight.

Rumi’s jaw trembled. “You think I don’t notice?” she pressed, voice thick with hurt she couldn’t hide anymore. “The way you look at me like I’m… annoying. Like I’m nothing. Like I’ll never be good enough for you.”
“That’s not—” Mira’s voice faltered, snapping off before it could betray her. She clenched her teeth hard enough her jaw ached.
Rumi didn’t stop. She couldn’t—she was unraveling, and she dragged Mira down with her.
“Then what is it?!” Rumi’s nails curled into Mira’s arm, desperate, pleading, furious. “Why do you treat me like I’m the problem? Like I’m the only one you can’t stand to be around? Everyone else gets the part of you that laughs, that smiles, that actually lets people in—but me?” Her breath shuddered. “All I get is this.”
Her voice cracked on this, and it hit harder than any hit they’d thrown.
Mira squeezed her eyes shut, chest trembling. Stop. Please stop. I can’t do this.
But Rumi pushed—because she needed an answer, because she was breaking.
“You hate me so much? Then fine—say it!” she choked. “Say it to my face so I can finally stop wondering why the hell I keep trying with you.”

Summary
Rumi’s mind wanders, desperate for a change of subject. Her gaze lands on the two women who’ve been repeatedly plaguing her mind ever since she saw them step out of the limousine. Mira grins and sips on her drink, listening intently to whatever Zoey’s saying, the shorter girl gesticulating her hands wildly in the air. An ache settles in Rumi’s sternum, and that thought, that possibility—the possibility that this show can actually work—rattles through her skull.
“Hey, Celine?” she starts, not looking away from the view ahead of her. “I know it’s unconventional, but can I give out two First Impression Roses?”
Celine considers her words and follows her gaze. She presses her lips into a thin line, then she shrugs in acceptance. “Sure. After all, you’re the Bachelorette.”

Returning to her chair, she poured herself a glass of whiskey. Celine raised it in the air, waiting for someone else to meet her.No one did.
“Happy birthday, Mi-yeong,” she said before taking a sip. “I miss you.” Celine stared at the whiskey, alcohol mixing with the melting ice cube to make a strange illusion in her glass. She sighed, finishing the rest of her drink in two sips.
Celine groaned as she poured herself another glass.

Rumi is, at last, ready to accept the invitation to join Mira and Zoey, now that there are no more secrets. A kiss, a touch, a taste… and then so much more. What begins as a careful exploration turns into lingering gazes, soft touches, whispered breaths, and a heat that refuses to be contained. Every caress teeters between curiosity and craving, but as their touches grow bolder, memories of being exposed on stage flare, causing panic that makes it hard to fully surrender. Trust becomes a trembling act, but with Mira's and Zoey’s patience, she learns to let herself be wanted, to let desire and vulnerability coexist, and to discover that intimacy can be safe and healing. The line between friendship and something more begins to blur, leaving nothing quite the same again.

Rumi ignored her chest squeezing.
“-A stunning girlfriend, Mira. I mentioned her, right? My girlfriend Mira-” The woman stopped abruptly and lowered her head down into her arms. “Jeez, Zoey, stop rambling at the deaf woman.” It was muffled, but Rumi heard it.
Silenced by grief, Rumi’s world is transformed when she crosses paths with Mira and Zoey, who guide her toward a voice she thought was lost forever.

Rumi hadn’t meant to cause such a scene. She just wasn’t thinking straight.
Celine had told her Zoey and Mira would kill her if they found out what she was, and Rumi had come to the conclusion that she was probably right.
Her plan, as tenuous a description as that word was, was to cut the patterns out. If she could cut out the parts of her that made her dangerous, that made her less than human, that made her so unloveable, maybe she’d stop feeling so fucking guilty every time Mira or Zoey opened up to her.
They loved each other from the start, but it just wasn't that simple.
