Summary
Miles watches Phoenix draw another heart in the sand. His mind feels quicker than usual, jumping from thought to thought, to the last time they saw each other in Phoenix’s office, to the feeling of his tears hot on Miles’s shirt, to the coffee from this morning still buzzing in his body. He watches Phoenix in silence for a moment, transfixed by the way his finger carves shapes into the shifting sand.
“I’ve been thinking,” he says. “About the last time we saw each other. Six months ago. In your office.”
Over magic tricks, glasses of wine, stubborn grains of sand clinging to their hair, and the fear that an ill advised meeting at Phoenix’s office following his disbarment months before has tainted their relationship, Miles hosts Phoenix and his new ward at his beach house.

The years have buffed out some of his roughest edges, but his friend’s brow still spends much too much time furrowed, due in no small part to Phoenix himself. When he’s asleep though, his face finally fully relaxes and he looks young, younger than he looked when he actually was young, even. And he’s a beautiful sleeper, somehow - no one is beautiful when they’re sleeping, not even Trucy whose mouth tends to hang open at unflattering angles to the point where she’s always very cute but he’d refrain from calling her a pretty sleeper. But Edgeworth - Phoenix guesses that it’s due in no small part to the fact that he’s an unreasonably attractive man when he’s awake, all smooth pale skin and strong jawlines and sharp, piercing grey eyes, but he truly manages to look the part of sleeping beauty. It’s hard to believe, sometimes, that this man is Phoenix’s best friend, seemingly untouchable and impossibly important.

Barok seated himself but made no move toward the coffee. Across from him, Kazuma was picking at the edge of the paper—not out of nerves but out of detachment, the idle ritual of someone who didn’t intend to read it at all. And it was always this—these gestures without conclusion, this domestic half-life. The shared quiet was not camaraderie, not exactly. But it was honest. And for Barok, that had become a sort of necessity.
The fire gave a reluctant pop. Outside, something metallic scraped—a horseshoe on stone, perhaps, or the shifting of a carriage shaft. All of London, turning in place.
(In which Barok and Kazuma spend a winter in London, argue about the country estate, and navigate silences that speak too loudly.)
