    Summary

    Dunk says nothing.
The not-saying costs him. He can feel the words crowding up behind his teeth, the foolish desperate words, and what of this, what of me, what of the dead candle and the unbarred door, and he holds them, because he knows what they are worth, which is nothing, less than nothing, they are the kind of words that end a thing like this, and Dunk has discovered in himself a cowardice he did not know he owned, which is that he would rather have the fire on these terms than not have it at all.

    Summary

The ER receives a mass casualty alert after a school bus rollover sends a dozen injured elementary students to Pittsburgh Trauma.

Their teacher arrives with them — conscious, bleeding, and somehow still organising care for everyone else.

“The green wristbands are allergy alerts,” she insists while blood soaks through her cardigan. “Please check the green bands first.”

Nobody understands why Jack Abbott suddenly can’t look away until Dana opens the chart and sees the emergency contact listed at the bottom:

    Dr. Jack Abbott.

    Summary

“You said this was about ‘mundane legal matters’?” Grace prompts.

“Yes.” The Attorney confirms, digging through his leather briefcase. “It took some time for things to get settled what with the wedding and the subsequent funerals and all, but the estate is finally ready for you to take the reins.”

“The estate? What estate? I abdicated the high seat.”

“Yes, well… like I said, these are entirely mundane legal proceedings. This has nothing to do with Mr. Le Bail or the High Council.” He hands Grace a packet of paper, waiting for her to scan over it before continuing. “Even in the absence of Mr. Le Bail’s favor, the Danforth family fortune is considerably immense, especially for a woman of your…” The Attorney trails off, eyeing Grace and Faith’s depressing poor people apartment. “Economic circumstances.”

“Wait,” Grace sputters, flipping through the paperwork. “I don’t get it. Why would I inherent the Danforth family fortune?”

“Well, you are the last remaining Danforth.” The attorney explains simply. As though it’s so simple.

    Summary

The Danforth bloodline ended because of Titus’s recklessness. Because he allowed weakness to take root in him and failed to do what his father expected. There is no excuse for the lapse, for the guard he let slip. He should have been more careful—at least until the Coronation was complete. He should have killed Grace well before she had a chance to bargain for her life.

If only he could have another shot at it.

“Fortunately for you, your failure is also mine,” Le Bail says. “Yet I am not one who accepts defeat so easily. You will be given the chance to correct the outcome of the Game, and you will repeat it until the desired outcome is achieved.”

“Be warned,” Le Bail quickly adds. “What first appears a blessing may soon reveal itself to be a curse.”
