Summary
Till, a marine biologist, had the research opportunity of a lifetime right before him. He and his team had captured a merman in all his glory. Ivan—as they decided to name him—was to be studied for the coming months before being returned to the ocean.
But letting go would become increasingly difficult as time passed, especially when the merman—transcending all the barriers inherent to their respective species—began to grow fond of his researcher.
"It was simply beautiful. Angular, masculine, and serious, with a few dark scales dusting his high cheekbones. His eyes were a deep, jet-black hue, with pupils that—even from that distance—Till was certain were a menacing red. He had thick brows, long lashes, and full lips; as he exhaled a stream of bubbles, they revealed the danger lurking within: rows of deadly sharp teeth. He moved closer to the glass, touching it from the inside with his large, dark palms pressed against the surface. The gills on his neck opened and closed, and his ears—or rather, the massive scales where human ears would normally be—stirred slightly amidst his black hair as he studied what lay before him."

Well, maybe there really wasn’t.
