Summary
Clenching her eyes shut as tightly as she can, Vi carefully focuses on controlling her breathing as she fights to keep her heartbeat steady and even. Even with a full twenty years of separation under her studded leather belt, Vi finds herself more wounded than ever at the thought of the half of her family that she had left behind. She has spent two decades on the opposite coast of where she had been born after her father whisked the two of them as far away as he could in the interest of starting over, during which she steadfastly avoided responding to messages or answering calls from her mother, in spite of how consistently the woman would reach out. She has so much to make up for, so many conversations to pick back up and so much time to try to take back, and she is more than terrified, but that fear is also laced with a heavy dose of excitement that keeps her heart fluttering, even as her stomach twists itself into tight knots.

Summary
Caitlyn Kiramman always thought she knew exactly where she fit in. Precise, composed, unshakable. She takes her first step onto the ward as an attending and leans into years of training.
The E.R. proves her wrong.
It's messy, and sloppy, and unruly, and out of control. It doesn't bend to her order. It breaks it.
And then there's Vi.
A nurse who shines in the chaos. Quick, gut-based, subverting rules rather than obeying. She stays longer than anyone. Patients trust her without question. She has something heavy, something unsaid.
Caitlyn doesn't pity her. She notices her.
What begins as observation becomes something quieter, more sinister. Late nights. Lingering glances. Conversations that don't quite end.
Vi, who never learned to do anything else. The Caitlyn who just knows control.
And somewhere in between them, something fragile starts to take shape.
And in an arena that revolves around life and death, it's the quiet, unspoken thing that seems most uncertain.

Summary
I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.
