Two dragons saved an elm from the great black dragon so that the tree and the little fawn growing among its roots could return to the shade of the stag... But the black dragon had left poison in the wood and in the earth, and the storm wrapped itself around the wounded tree as gently as rain, for even the tallest trees may split when they have been hurt deep inside.
The stag did not mind the cracks in the bark.. The elm was its home, its heart, and its other soul.

Duncan felt the cold spreading slowly through his chest while he remained motionless before the door, listening to Egg speak of the duel exactly as he would have spoken of moving troops or closing trade routes before winter.
Or: They say hell is paved with good intentions, but what happens to those who suffer the consequences of those "good intentions"?
