Because everyone he had ever loved had died, without exception. He does not have the means to protect them. His luck never extends to protect anyone he loves, only himself. It steals from anyone who is willing to care about him, care for him, love him more than themselves. So it was far easier to ignore the loneliness at the idea of losing his feelings of love if he thought he didn't have a shot to begin with. He only took gambles that put his own life at risk.
It's always the ones that tell him to live that end up being the most hypocritical, after all.

Summary

Aventurine clicks his tongue as he continues to stare at the display. After a moment, he decides. “Two slices of the classic chocolate cake please. To go.”
Veritas’ hands work quickly, grabbing two boxes from the side and sliding open the display counter glass door.
“Ah yes, excellent choice to satisfy a sweet craving,” Veritas comments as he scoops up the slices, smiling as the chocolate cake is no longer whole.
“No no, it's not for me. I don't like sweets,” Aventurine says.
