The music was too loud to have a meaningful conversation, but they tried. Tommy handed him another drink. Buck was too focused on not getting jostled and spilling the overpriced alcohol all over the both of them, so he missed the context, when Tommy said, ”Puppy?”
A bit of a non sequitur, but Buck didn't think anything of it. He had been called a golden retriever before, so he laughed and said, ”I mean, yeah.”
Tommy's whole face crinkled in a smile. ”Yeah, you are.”

Buck can feel the attention and interest of the couple that settles at a high table not far away before he fully turns towards them. They're gorgeous, really: the woman is a little older, her long, copper hair done in an elegant braid that falls over the low neckline of her blue, flowy dress. The guy is some years younger than her, his body tall, wide shoulders and sharp cheekbones. The flicker of interest is like the softest caress, but it's shut down as quickly as it appeared, leaving the faintest of traces at the back of Buck's throat.
~ the one where Buck is a sex demon looking for a snack and Abby and Tommy pick him up. Only the night doesn’t end just with sex.

There was no reason for him to intervene. They didn’t know each other. Not in any meaningful way. A brief exchange in a stairwell did not justify involvement. She might not even remember him. From her perspective, he would be a stranger—a large, older man in a car pulling up unprompted in the dark, in the rain. There were variables there he couldn’t control. Unknowns in how she would react, how she would interpret it.
He didn’t like unknowns.
He also didn’t like the image of her standing there, soaked through, waiting in the rain.
The irritation came quickly—not at her, but at the situation. At himself.
“Fuck,” he said under his breath.
He signaled left.
