Billy Hargrove's got this job. He throws a leaning stack of pizza boxes into the back of the Camero and drives them to the ungrateful and poor-tipping residents of Hawkins. He resents it in a million different ways for so many different reasons, but if it's good for nothing else, it allows him to see Steve Harrington a few times a week, which is just about the only damn thing he’s living for nowadays. Usually, it's a wordless exchange of Steve’s usual order. However, one night, Billy gets this terrible idea and pulls over on the side of the road. From that night on, Hawkins' has one less terrible-tipper and Billy Hargrove says much more to Steve Harrington than nothing at all.

"What else would they fucking be?" Billy says.
Steve might be the stupidest person alive, because he nearly says flowers again before his brain catches up with his mouth. It’s cold on his front porch. The sky above threatens snow. He asks, "Where did you get them?"
Who gave them to you? Who are they for?
"The store, Harrington, where people buy flowers." He shoves them in Steve's direction, stiff-armed. "Are you going to take them or what?"

Summary
These days Billy remembers rushing waters and harsh waves, the slap of the ocean against his thighs as his surfboard tipped and his mouth filled with brine. God was in the waves and in the clouds. He spoke to Billy as the press of the ocean, the salt in his lungs. The sacrament of drowning.
He remembers sizzling heat and sand, and knows the rocks at Lover’s Lake are a sad comparison. When he opens his eyes there will be no surf and no boardwalk. The path behind him will be bracketed by dense Indiana trees and twisting roots, older than time, filled with feelings too lost for the help of St. Anthony.
Steve skips a rock along the water and it jumps with plucking splashes, before it lands with a harsh glump as it’s swallowed by the deeps. Billy didn’t hear Steve’s feet crunching on the rocks, doesn’t open his eyes to check.
“Rough day?” Steve asks, and Billy sighs into the ground.

Billy Hargrove is not a sentimental person. He’s learned by now that most things of value to him end up broken. His father taught him that.
Most of his records end up cracked, his favorite clothes either torn or spattered with the blood dripping from his nose, and the first boy he ever loved left his house in California with a broken wrist to match Billy’s heart.
Billy doesn’t really keep things of value anymore.
Except for one thing.
