She is not sure the word exists, in any language she has known, for the particular condition of being the one who remained. There is a word for a wife whose husband dies. A word for a child whose parents are gone. But for the twin who wakes each morning in a body that was made with someone else’s, for the mother who wakes each morning in a body that once contained the child, now gone—
Agnes had never stopped watching for the shape of Hamnet in Judith’s face. The way she tilted her head. The set of her jaw when she was thinking. These small survivals. Grief is strange like that: it does not empty you of a person. It teaches you to find them in unexpected places, in the people who carry their traces forward, so that love keeps moving through the world long after the vessel that first held it is gone.
