"Alright," he agrees, because it's funny. Because he misses him. Because it's been a shitty day, shitty week, shitty month, and it's worn him down. Because he's tired, and dizzy and nauseous. Because today, he really feels like ruining everything good he has left going for him. He's sick of the tension, and shouting and his blood on his father's hands. Best to blame the cigarettes. Must have made him anxious too. "Let's talk."

Jason thinks back to the first time he heard one of the many screaming matches he had to get used to with Dick around, and remembers shaky hands and restless feet, waiting to bolt in case something gets thrown his way. He remembers locking himself up in in his room and wondering why the air suddenly seemed ten times thicker, and his throat too constricted to let it through. He lies through his teeth.

“I knew his face three years dead beneath a domino. I knew it as he carved a chunk of flesh from his own scalp and cursed my name…” His fingertips drift to a spot two inches behind his ear. Is that uneven texture the sign of a years-old scar, or just a tangle of hair?

The most real shit I've ever read, for reasons unknown. Or, well, the reasons are known, but I sure ain't sitting with them long enough to acknowledge that.
Phenomenal writing and characterisation. I've never seen anything quite like it. I think this is the one fic I've been searching for my whole life without knowing it lwk. For all my attempts at writing, I'm still not able to express how great this is. And it's seriously fucking amazing.
